Colonists from Equus Prime (Equus 04 or Hippo Campus), fed up with the feudalistic control of the government, migrated to Melfred in 986 after the Third Frontier Wars had subsided. Most Colonists had been members of the Colonial Forces supplied by Equus to the Imperial Army, and as reward for their services, the Army allowed soldiers and their families to colonize planets within the Imperium, as is standard policy for "Colonial Units.". Most of the families chose Melfred, due to its distance from Equus Prime, as well as the fact that there was more dry land available. These families took to raising beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses and various grains, most common being corn, malt, rye and wheat. In conjunction with the grain production, and a natural outcome of grain production, was the development of a distillation industry for producing whisky. An exceptional reputation for producing fine whisky was developed.

In 1053, the Rugerio family, at that time the ruling baronial faction of Equus, desired a piece of the action on Melfred. Concocting trumped up charges of tax evasion, fraud and sedition, all falsehoods since Melfred had been established as an Imperial Client state of ex-military families, the "Rugerio's Raiders," a mercenary company was sent to Melfred to attempt a take over of the whisky operations.

The locals arose, armed with their fathers and grandfathers weapons from years back. The "ruffians," as the Melfred forces called the Rugerio family troops, were not expecting such stiff resistance and were forcefully expelled from Melfred by 1054. Claims of clandestine arms shipments shipped in beneath the Rugerio blockade were rampant.

From 1054 to the present, an undeclared trade war has existed. An uneasy peace settled on both planets, with the Rugerio family selling off its claims to properties owned on Melfred. Occasional boarding of Melfred traders and non-aligned traders coming into Equus space have been causing tensions to mount. Jealousy still reigns in the Rugerio family.

A trade and mercenary company has purchased properties on Melfred, in particular Quiern Island. This island of approximately 30,000 square kms was unsuspectingly purchased by the Tesseract Company from brokers on Equus Prime. Landing, and surveying the island, the owners prepared to break ground on a Class A starport. A visit by the planetary government led to negotiations for tax breaks, protective service contracts, and environmental conservation and protectorates on the island. Oberlindes financed the building of an upstation portion of a Class A starport. The Melfred Council, desirous to keep in good terms with the trade megacorporation has allowed the Tesseract Company to place their mercenary recruiters throughout the planet. The contracts read that at least 20% of the "mercenary" company will be made up of militia troops from Melfred. Off worlders were canvassed and recruited to settle on Melfred, in particular Quiern Island, and to join the Tesseract Company. The company purchased and crewed several wet Navy and Close Orbit ships to assist with planetary defenses.

A research center, focussing on the local fauna called the "Firesword," has been set aside on Queirn Island. Here scientist and tourist may visit the Firesword Valley to view the infrequent blooming of the Firesword flowers. A tourist city has been built to accommodate visitors to the planet and the island. The Class A starport has various amenities available to assist the planetary visitor. The remainder of the planet is connected by an extensive transportation system, making Teesla City only an hour away from Quiern Island.

On 295-1116, Melfred (Equus 08) declared independence from the feudal government of Equus Prime (Equus 04 or Hippo Campus) and placed its petition of independence before the Imperial Senate, Domain of Deneb. This in response to the forcible attempts by the Rugerio familiy of Equus, Feudal Overlords of that planet.

90 days earlier, Familia Rugerio, in an unprovoked attack, hit both the up and down stations of Melfred. Mercenary and Oberlindes Corporation forces held off the attack while sustaining heavy losses. Imperial Naval forces have taken station at Equus and Melfred to prevent further violence and bloodshed.

Imperial Naval Press releases confirm the movement of Naval vessels from Mora and Lanth to Equus, specifically for peace-keeping within equus prime and Melfred. Melfred revolves around the class MD V red dwarf.
