"The Sheboygan"

Chubohgan

The Chubohgan are a native sentient life form of Melfred, inhabiting the island of "Sheboygan." The natives live at TL 3 and can communicate intelligently in Ganglic/Spanglic after some instruction, although the speech pattern is hampered by the narrowness of the jaw and mouth.

The subjects are hexapedal, 2 arms, 2 legs and 2 wings. They would be considered "flyers" if they were non-sentient creatures. Their society would be considered "hunter-gatherer" for anthropological purposes. Of approximately human height, they are fairly lightweight, averaging around 40 kilograms. This must be due to the cartilage and hollow bones that obviously are the make-up of the skeletal structure.

They are radially symmetrical, and have a flairable tail that upon initial appearance looks rather thick and leathery. The tail is used in flight and appears to be used during mating rituals and may even be a measure of emotion. The head is fairly wide, ~30 - 40 cm across, oval shaped with two large eyes and tall ears. The eyes are especially adapted to night vision and the ears rotate when attempting to locate prey. The jaw is small and looks to be puckered. An elongated tongue extends and retracts from the jaw. The tongue is rasped and can shear pieces of flesh from the prey.

Mental capacity appears to be close to human capacity. Thinking and reasoning seem to be fairly regimented, and personality is governed by a "transfer" of being. The personality changes are seen as spiritual and call for the individual to "call-up" the spirit to accomplish a task. As an example, an individual would call up the warrior spirit in him before going into a fight. A "hunter spirit" would be called prior to hunting a particular prey. Therefore, the proper reaction desired by an individual requires concentration prior to an activity and allowing the personality to surface and manifest itself.

Most individuals, male or female, are skilled weapon makers as well as capable low TL warriors. Hunting is not a sex biased activity. Childcare is shared between the adults of a family group. Families are part of a tribe, which is part of the island population. Inter-marriage occurs between tribal groups and not within family groups.

Their deity beliefs are based upon a pantheistic state of "god." Ceremony, mythology and ritual are all-important parts of the Chubohgan religion.
